The magnificent morning tea, put on by the local ladies at sunny Nowendoc, distracted the riders from their concentration of the road ahead. The profile maps had shown Thunderbolts Way with big undulations, long downhills with a CAUTION for logging trucks and a massive vertical drop from 950 metres to 50 metres in just 5 kilometres.
As they approached Carson’s Lookout the heavens opened up and cyclists were lashed with torrential rain, hail and wind, reminding them to respect mother nature and the saturated descents that lay ahead.
Cyclists were commenting from day one, after our impressive Police assisted departure from Brisbane, that the hilly sections would be tough and their concerns became reality. Mt Tamborine gave riders a birds eye view of Surfers Paradise, before parading through the streets upon their gleaming treadlies.
Australia’s most easterly point, Byron Bay was alive as usual, with holiday makers, the brown snake, whale watching at the lighthouse, and the playful dolphins amusing cyclists, as they rode between the Clarence River and the sugar cane.
The day to Dorrigo was gladly interrupted by the Tyringham ladies putting on a super spread, school children sharing their experiences and Pansie the dairy cow sharing her milk. The hills were long tough and relentless and riders let me know that the support vehicle was the best place to be.
Masseurs eased the pain each night, as did the scrumptious meal and a few drinks in the Hunter Valley.Pelicans welcomed us to the excellent accommodation at The Entrance, overlooking the ocean, with water aerobics and a big last night.
Fast riding to the Ettalong Ferry was the call, before cruising as a bunch to Manly where 50 cyclists reluctantly stopped amongst the roar of Teen Challenge supporters and friends.Congratulations to all. We had a ball.
