Ride Report Around the Bay in a Day 2005

When Phil McDonald rode in the Around the Bay in a Day bike ride five years ago it was on a Penny Farthing. This year the 60 year old is going one better by riding the entire 210km on a scooter.

The Port Melbourne bike enthusiast decided to do something crazy to mark his 60th birthday, after running from St Kilda to Mt Kosciusko on his 50th.

Phil's wife Susan will also take part in the ride (on a bicycle), which they are expected to complete in 12 hours, cruising along between 22 and 25km/h. It's just another milestone for Phil, who in 1985 rode his "Penny" from Adelaide to Melbourne (800km in four days) and won a place in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest distance covered on a Penny Farthing in 24 hours (512km).

In 1988 he raised $100,000 for Rotary riding his Penny 15,000 kms around Australia in four and a half months.

But the Finnish-made scooter is now his passion. "I get up to 60 or 70kmh going down hills," he said. "I squat down behind the handle bars and right away you begin to pick up speed. The scooter just goes flying past the bikes."

Around the Bay in a Day is a Australia's largest one-day challenge ride. This Sunday, about 9,000 people will ride 210km, while 3,000 riders have opted for 100km or 50km rides.
