The Great Ocean Walk Sets Off This Morning — Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles on Foot

This morning a small group of walkers leaves Apollo Bay and heads west along one of Australia's great coastal trails. Seven days later they'll reach the Twelve Apostles, having covered one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in the country on foot.

Here's what the route looks like.

Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles

The Great Ocean Walk runs 104 kilometres along Victoria's southwest coast, and AllTrails guides this group from start to finish. The trail begins at the edge of Apollo Bay, climbs into the Great Otway National Park, and follows the cliff tops west — through rainforest, past remote beaches, and along headlands with the Southern Ocean below.

Along the way: Cape Otway and its historic lighthouse, Johanna Beach, Moonlight Head, and the Shipwreck Coast. The walking is genuinely varied — some days open and exposed on the clifftops, others shaded through thick Otway forest. Each section earns the next.

The trail ends at the Twelve Apostles Marine National Park. Seven days of walking, finished with one of the most iconic views in Australia.

How AllTrails Runs the Walk

This is a fully supported guided tour — accommodation, luggage transfer, and meals are taken care of each day, and a guide travels with the group throughout. The group is small, which makes a practical difference to how the walk moves through the landscape.

The Great Ocean Walk has been part of the AllTrails calendar for a number of years, and it consistently draws strong feedback. Walking tourists find their way to it for many of the same reasons cyclists do: the support removes the logistical load, and the small group means you can move at a sensible pace without the compromises of a larger tour.
