Murray River from Source to Sea

A lot of our tours are ‘point to point’ or ‘city to city’. This concept supports the idea of a journey for the cyclist which is a key part of the experience on an AllTrails tour.

Every now and again though, we have a start and end point that truly embodies the spirit of a journey, and our Murray River tour is one such tour. Starting in Thredbo village, up near Mt Kosciuszko in the Snowy Mountains, we are not too far from the marshy spring that marks the beginning of the Murray River. At this point, looking at the dribbling stream, it is hard to imagine how influential, and ‘Mighty’ the waterway becomes as it gains volume and significance just a little way downstream as it becomes Australia’s longest river, reaching 200m in width along many sections.

The Murray is also one of the world’s slowest rivers, with a very low fall rate, dropping only 2.5cm per km in its last 160km. The result is a journey time of approx 3-4 weeks for water to carry the length of the river - which is pretty much exactly how long we will take to ride it.

Join us on our journey from the gorgeous Snowy Mountains in NSW, along the river that acts as a border between NSW and Vic, through the holiday resort towns that are built on river activities, into South Australia and the stunning Riverland region, down to the Murray Mouth where it opens up into the sea near Adelaide.
