The outback just has something special. The exhilaration of setting off in the cool early-morning mist and feeling the sun slowly warming the earth as it rises and brings in the day is like nothing you can imagine. It’s a big challenge and it’s not for everyone, but you get to see so many of those iconic scenes that feature in the travel shows and on the postcards, plus the local characters that make up the fabric of the Aussie Outback. If the thought of an epic ride with long days in the saddle across the vast expanses of the outback, mixed with spectacular scenery gives you goose bumps - it might just be for you. Join us on the Darwin to Broome journey and you will be telling stories about this ride for years to come.

Who Is This Tour For?

Experienced, fit cyclists looking for one of Australia's great outback adventures. This is not a beginner's tour — daily distances average 116km at a 25km/hr average, with some days exceeding 150km. It suits cyclists who have completed multi-day tours before and are comfortable with long days in the saddle. The mostly flat, sealed terrain makes the distances achievable for those with the right fitness base. E-road and e-gravel bikes are welcome for those wanting a little extra assistance.

Quick FAQs

Where does the Darwin to Broome tour start and finish? The tour starts in Darwin in the Northern Territory and finishes in Broome, Western Australia. The full route covers 2,289km over 22 nights, passing through Kakadu National Park, Katherine Gorge and the Kimberley.

Do I have to do all three stages? No. The tour is structured as three stages that can be booked independently. Stage One runs Darwin to Katherine (28 May – 3 June, 6 nights), Stage Two runs Katherine to Kununurra (3–9 June, 6 nights), and Stage Three runs Kununurra to Broome (9–19 June, 10 nights). Each stage works as a standalone experience.

What type of cycling is involved? Sealed bitumen road cycling throughout, on a mix of outback highways and quieter roads. Daily averages are 116km with a difficulty rating of 8/10. Some days exceed 150km and an expected average speed of 25km/h is required. Road bikes are recommended; e-road and e-gravel bikes are welcome.

What level of fitness is required? A high level of fitness is required. This tour is rated 8/10 difficulty — the terrain is flat but the distances are significant. Previous experience on multi-day tours is strongly recommended. Shorter daily distance options are available on some days and the support vehicle is always on hand.

Is this tour part of the Australia Ride? Yes. The Darwin to Broome is one of the stages of AllTrails' Australia Ride concept — a series of tours that together cover the perimeter of the Australian continent. Learn more about the Australia Ride concept here.

What do previous cyclists say about this tour? What Our Cyclists Say

"I way exceeded my own expectations of how far I thought I would ride. I'll take some credit, but also offer some credit to the way the trip was designed and organised. The rest days were really well placed — a chance to take a break from cycling while also seeing some truly fantastic parts of the country." Sandra (VIC)

"Great organisation, interesting routes, adaptable to meet changing circumstances — and most importantly, friendly and focused on what needs to be done. Very highly recommended." Alex (VIC)

"The organisation, support, camaraderie and fun was first class. All the little extras — like the data-projected outdoor picture show in the outback — made the trip even more special. It was nothing short of fantastic." Alan V (VIC)

"The food was plentiful and of a very high standard, as was everything on the trip. The crew were excellent hosts — very supportive, communicative and knowledgeable. Supporting that many people from before dawn till after dusk would test most people, but they were genuinely interested in our wellbeing. I would have loved to have kept going!" Jim N (VIC)
