Quick FAQs

What level of fitness is required for the Great Ocean Walk? You need to be a reasonably keen walker — not necessarily fast, but consistent. Most days are rated easy to moderate, with a few harder sections involving steps and climbs. The bigger challenge can be the accumulated fatigue from walking multiple days back-to-back. AllTrails can provide a training plan on request.

Can I skip sections of the day's route if needed? Absolutely. You can meet the support vehicle at certain points during the day to skip a section, or take a full rest day if you need a break from walking. Shorter daily distance options are also available on most days.

Is the Great Ocean Walk busy? There will be other walkers on the track but the tour runs at a time of year that avoids the peak high season when the walk is at its busiest. It is also a one-way walk, so you rarely encounter people coming from the opposite direction, and it generally doesn't feel crowded.

Is it better to camp or use accommodation on the Great Ocean Walk? In AllTrails' view, accommodation is much better! It does mean daily transfers to and from the track, but the warm showers, private ensuite rooms, comfortable beds, heating and cooling, and restaurant dinners more than make up for it. A fully supported tour makes the walk achievable for many more people than the camping alternative.
