Our Italy Cycling Tour Has Set Off — Venice to Lucca via Tuscany

Yesterday morning, our group rolled out of the Veneto on the start of a 15-night cycling journey across northern and central Italy. Destination: Lucca, on the western edge of Tuscany. In between: the Prosecco region, Emilia-Romagna, Florence, and Pisa.

The Concept: A Cycling Tour at Italian Pace

The word for this tour is passeggiata — the Italian tradition of the evening stroll, which is less about getting somewhere and more about the pleasure of the journey itself. That's the spirit the itinerary is built around.

Daily distances average 57 km, which by cycling tour standards is relaxed. The idea is that you arrive somewhere with time and energy to actually explore it — not just check in and collapse. There are rest days in Ferrara and Florence built in for exactly that reason.

What the Group Is Riding Through

The route runs west across the country in three broad chapters.

First, the Prosecco region — vineyards, rolling hills, medieval towns, and the kind of roads that make Italian cycling so appealing. Then Emilia-Romagna, a region that doesn't have Tuscany's profile but more than holds its own — it's home to Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, and balsamic vinegar, and the UNESCO World Heritage city of Ferrara. Finally, Tuscany: Florence for a rest day, a ride to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and a finish in the beautiful walled city of Lucca.

The total distance is around 683 km on sealed roads and paved cycle paths, with one optional mountain day for those who want it. Difficulty rating is 5/10 — a mix of flat, undulating, and small hills.
